Langenfeld, M. G. (University of South Dakota, Vermillion) and P. F. Smith. Phosphorus distribution in pleuropneumonia-like and L-type organisms. J. Bacteriol. 86:1216-1219. 1963.-Sterol-requiring and sterol-nonrequiring pleuropneumonia-like organisms, salt-requiring and salt-nonrequiring L forms, and their parent bacteria, were analyzed for total, acid-soluble, lipid, and nucleic acid phosphorus. Total phosphorus in all types of organisms was equivalent, except for salt-requiring L forms in which it was greatly elevated. The elevated total phosphorus reflected a great increase in acid-soluble phosphorus in the salt-requiring L forms. The lipid phosphorus content of pleuropneumonia-like organisms and salt-nonrequiring L forms was significantly greater than in the other types of organisms. The nucleic acid phosphorus content of salt-requiring L forms was lower than that of all other organisms

Bacteriol. 83:500-506. 1962.-The content of total lipid and nonsaponifiable lipid depended upon the type of organism; the greatest amounts were found in pleuropneumonia-like organisms that required cholesterol for growth and in L-1, the L-form of Streptob...

The peculiar type of growth common to Asterococcus mycoides (Pleuropneumonia bouum), pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO), and L forms of bacteria has lead to confusion and controversy. This controversy involves the interrelationships of these groups and of strains within the groups as well as their relation to bacteria in general. Excellent reviews by Sabin (1941), Elleneberger-Nobel (1951), ...

Controversy exists concerning the relation or distinction of pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO) and L-type erganisms (Smith, Bacteriol. Rev. 28:97, 1964). While some feel that PPLO and L organisms may be identical, i.e., that PPLO are stabilized forms derived from bacteria (Barile et al., Oral Surg. Oral Med. Oral Pathol. 16:1395, 1963), others recognize sufficient differences to warrant pla...
متن کاملThe growth of pleuropneumonia-like organisms of human origin: cultivation in the developing chick embryo and an in vitro growth cycle.
Some strains of pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO) of human origin grow quite sparingly in vitro; therefore, attempts were made to determine if these organisms could be sustained better in the developing chick embryo. A semiquantitative comparison of growth on artificial media and in the chick embryo is presented. As pleuropneumonia-like organisms aIe frequent inhabitants of the genitourinar...
